Today I will tell you how a skin care brand changed my life, and I'm not exaggerating one bit. How could just one brand cause such a drastic change for someone already obsessed with beauty products? Simple. It cut through the bullshit. It spoke my language, and it educated me on everything I had been doing wrong all along. And because of them, I ended up going down the rabbit hole of skin care addiction and knowledge based purely on science, research, information, and testing.
Who What Why
Drunk Elephant was founded by Houstonian Tiffany Masterson after searching all over for skin care that did not contain what she called the Suspicious 6 Ingredients (Essential Oils, Fragrance, Silicones, Alcohol, Chemical Screens and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) that irritated already sensitized skin. Since she could never come across products that were free of all of these ingredients, she decided to make her own skin care line. Their policy is if there’s any doubt, it’s out. Which means that all potentially irritating ingredients do not get included in their products. For anyone interested, here is the full list.
I read about Tiffany’s story and could not believe how similar I felt. Growing up listening to: oil=bad, harsh scrubs=good, “alcohol based toners will dry out your acne!”, “toothpaste works great on pimples”, and having tried every single “cyclin” antibiotic and five rounds of Accutane… I couldn’t believe I hadn’t found the ‘cure’ for my crazy skin yet. Little did I realize, that not only was I further aggravating my skin trying to ‘scrub out’ the bad, I was destroying my skin moisture barrier that was the one line of defense that could help me in preventing all the misery I was going through. With time, my frustration with finding ‘the right’ products for my skin kept growing; everything irritated me, every brand promised but didn’t deliver, and in the infinitely complex world of endless ingredient lists, ‘natural is better’ and a sea of promotion and misinformation I did not know where to turn to. I came across the brand when I was searching for the billionth night cream that wouldn’t break me out. When I read what they were about something clicked. “Fragrances? Maybe those things are the culprit of everything” I thought. “Silicones could also be a problem actually… and maybe essential oils now that I think about it”. So I started reading what each of these was and why they could be problematic, and it snowballed into the beginning of a full immersion of skin care education, and here I am today.
Less Is More
At this point, like most of the impulsive decisions I sometimes make, I went ahead and bought three of their products and stopped using everything else I had at home cold turkey. The saleswoman at Sephora kindly gifted me some other product samples that day, and after a week of using Drunk Elephant, I was completely sold. My skin not only calmed the hell down (sorry, but seriously), but it felt plumper, healthier and brighter. A few weeks later I bought two more of their products online, and when my order arrived and a product was missing, their customer service went above and beyond to make up for it. So great quality products and great customer service made a complete fangirl out of me.
My Favorites So Far
Their award winning mask became an overnight sensation after its release and a staple in my skincare routine. It helps remove dead skin cells chemically, improves skin texture and nourishes and balances the skin. I use it about once every ten days to “reset” my skin and I could not imagine life before it nor does it compete with any mask or peeling product I have ever tried before. Key ingredients: 25% Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Tartaric, Citric and Lactic) and 2% Beta Hydroxy Acids (Salicylic)
What has now become my everyday morning moisturizer, B-Hydra feels fresh and hydrating on just-woken-up skin. Particularly in the summer months, I’ve found this to be the only moisturizer that helps my face stay feeling fresh all day. I add in a drop or two of Virgin Marula Oil on days I feel I need extra hydration, but overall this has been the perfect compromise for me. Key ingredients: Pineapple Ceramides and Pro-vitamin B5
A physical (Zinc Oxide) formulated 30 SPF that protects against UVA and UVB. The texture is luminous and tinted and leaves a slight, beautiful shimmer on the skin (and works on every skin color as you can see here). Feels non- greasy and works as a perfect base for makeup. It’s become my sunscreen for everyday wear. Key ingredients: 20% Zinc Oxide and Sunflower Sprout Extract
In the past facial oils were a hit or miss for me, mostly because I now realize many contained essential oils that irritated my skin. Enter this incredible miracle in a bottle that is 100% raw and unrefined. This is probably my desert island must have now, and just two or three drops are enough to make anyone’s skin feel reborn, seriously. The oil is packed with Omega’s and Antioxidants and absorbs at lightning speeds leaving your skin moisturized with no oily residue. Key ingredient: Pure Marula Oil
With C-Firma I learned the importance of incorporating Vitamin C in my skincare routine (in the morning). Vitamin C prevents the oxidation of sebum in the skin (which leads to clogged pores and breakouts) and protects your skin by helping fight pollutants and free radicals. C-Firma has almost single-handedly brightened my complexion and helped with pigmentation. I use this every moring before B-Hydra and it’s the product that has made me see the biggest results. Key ingredients: 15% L-Absorbic Acid, Ferulic Acid and Vitamin E
The cream that started the love-affair, this was the product responsible for me discovering the brand in the first place. I was looking for a night cream that would be rich and moisturizing but wouldn’t break me out, and I hit the jackpot. The texture of this cream is super fluffy and creamy but goes on smooth and absorbs very quickly. Many similar style creams contain silicones which are usually the culprit for congested skin! Key ingredients: Marula, Mongongo, Baobab, Kalahari Melon, Ximenia and Passion Fruit oils
For now, Drunk Elephant is only available in the United States, however, their PR team has already alluded to the fact that they might be available in Europe coming 2018 on social media. And no doubt we are all super excited for this to happen! One way to get your hands on these products would be to use a forwarding shipping site that gives you a US address and then forwards your package to you, however, it can be very risky as not many of these sites are 100% reliable and you are liable for importation taxes in your country when your parcel arrives.
For now that’s all chicas, I really suggest that all of you suffering from whacky skin give this brand a try, making sure to remove all potential aggressors from your skin care regimen and starting from zero in order to figure out which are the real culprits to your skin woes. Thank for reading!
